Tending to the Garden

Tend to the garden—don’t be so quick to throw away the fruit.
I once inherited an employee I was warned about—told they would be detrimental to the team and difficult for me to manage, even because of my demographic.
But as I built my team—the garden—I chose to form my own perspective rather than rely on someone else’s experience—the fruit they handed me.
What I’ve learned is this:
When people share opinions about others, consider the place they’re speaking from. Is it frustration? Hurt? Bias? Assumptions?
Your experience doesn’t have to mirror theirs. As leaders, we have a responsibility to assess, engage, and decide for ourselves—not simply adopt the narratives we’re given.
Sometimes, what others are ready to discard just needs the right environment to grow.
